Sat. Feb 12th. 2011, To El Paso TX

Join us as we travel North America in our Holiday Rambler Vacationer,
 since August 2006

285 miles today (450 kms)

Bright sunny and cold this morning as usual. The difference this morning is that I have to do a few things outside and the metal is cold, 29f (-2c) on my bare hands so reluctantly, gloves for a bit. But by 8:30 am we are "On the road Again".

Our route today
It was a great day for traveling, good temperatures, sunshine and not too much traffic or too long of a day. We left Arizona and drove thru New Mexico for about 3 hours then entered Texas all on I-10. We spend a lot of time driving this road because it is the most southern route (and best weather) it a runs all the way from Florida in the east to Los Angeles on the west coast and we have driven every mile of it at least once, the section just to get thru Texas in 848 miles. The rest areas are always nice allowing us to stop every hour or so to stretch and check out our coach. About 11:30 we stopped at a New Mexico rest area for a quick lunch ( I pre made ham, egg and cheese on an English muffin) Here we noted an example of the New Mexico State Flower the Yucca Plant. Carrying on, we passed the Continental Divide this is a drainage divide on one side it drains  into the Pacific ocean , the other Atlantic ocean. We continued enjoying the scenery and chatting then fueled up at the Flying J in Anthony Texas at Mile 0. The gas in here was $2.99 (.79 cents a litre) .50 cents a gallon less that New Mexico.

Our destination today is Mission RV park on the east end of El Paso. We arrived at 2:15 pm and got a pull thru site, hooked up to their cable TV, and high speed internet. Then went for a soak in the hot tub and a swim, back home to enjoy our books in the warm sunshine for a while, then just heat up some of our leftover stew served over a bed on egg noodles. Read a bit more, some tv, then on the road again in the morning for another adventure.

  1. When you are on the road all day, do you ever spend the night at Walmart?

  2. Contessa, we have stayed at Walmarts, usually Flying J's, or the rest areas in Texas, sometimes casinos, but because we are off the road by 2 or 3 pm these 2 days we thought we would check out a couple of campgrounds for a change (pull thru sites) and still get a discount of 10 to 15% using their wifi, electricity and cable tv, yesterday, pool and hot tub to boot. We have spent hardly any money on camping this year, less miles, no tolls, its been all membership or BLM camping. Between now and April 20th we have only 2 overnights, the rest are all membership campgrounds for a week or more.
