Sun. Mar. 6th, 2011, Willis Texas, Patsy Cline

Join us as we travel North America in our Holiday Rambler Vacationer, since August 2006

Overnight was quite cool compared to what we have been used to, but good for sleeping. A bright sunny morning and things warmed up rather quickly. Coffees , computing and a walkabout to check out the waterfront of Lake Conroe just a couple of hundred yards away. I chatted with our neighbour Jim from Syracuse New York, while sitting in the morning sun.

Then John walked by and said hi. We had met John and Dian (from Michigan) at Rock Port Texas (they were camped right behind us) We enjoyed a few "Happy Hours" there and hope we can get together for one before they depart on Tuesday.

I check for things to do in the area and found that in Conroe there is the Historic Crighton Theatre. This was built in 1934 and has and interesting history of ownerships and restoration.

While I was checking their website I noticed that there was a theatre production matinee show today, the final show of "Always Patsy Cline"based on a true storyA quick check revealed that tickets were still available so online I purchased two tickets (senior rate, gotta love it). A bite to eat then a nice scenic country drive to Conroe.

The production "Always Patsy Cline" has been enjoyed by audiences around the world and was an excellent show, good singing and humorous story line. It is based on a true story of a devoted fan Louise Seger  who had a chance encounter at a Texas Honky Tonk in Houston (only a few miles away) and became a close friend of Patsy's until Patsy's death in 1963. Even more interesting is the fact that Louise passed away in 2004 at her home on Lake Conroe, Willis Texas, across the lake where we are camping!

Well now after a fantastic, energetic musical production we departed the theatre around 4:30pm and a nice 15 minute drive thru Conroe, the countryside and into the town of Willis. Here we spotted a nice looking restaurant called the Pizza Shack and decided to wind up a great day with a nice supper. Seated inside, the friendly staff was great and talkative and we checked the very extensive menu. Well I spotted the catfish platter and could not resist, (we have only found good catfish in certain areas of the country), Suzie's choice was the chicken fettucini alfredo. Both were very reasonably priced, huge portions, complete with a large salad, bread sticks, and prepared perfectly.

Now enjoying this feast while we discussed the theatre production was very relaxing and of course we had leftovers, enough for another meal. Then return home and compute for a bit and watch a movie on tv.

Just another great day enjoying the local flair of small town America, gotta love it.
